Postdoctoral fellow receives Acta Student Awards 2021

João Vitor Campos, a Postdoctoral fellow from LaMaV/DEMa/UFSCar under the supervision of Professor Ana Candida Martins Rodrigues, has received the Acta Student Awards 2021 for his work entitled On the Arrhenius-like behavior of conductivity during flash sintering of 3 mol% yttria-stabilized zirconia ceramics – published in Scripta Materialia on October 2021. The awardee’s study is related to his doctoral thesis supervised by Professor Eliria M. J. A. Pallone (FZEA – USP).

The Acta Student Awards selects annually candidates that had published their works in one of the Acta Journals (Acta Materialia, Scripta Materialia, Acta Biomaterialia, and Materialia) as the first author, during their masters or Ph.D. Several factors are considered in evaluating each nominee: the quality of the paper or papers for which the committee nominated the individual, recommendation letters, and leadership potential.
In the selected paper, the authors performed in-situ synchrotron x-ray diffraction to accurately measure the temperature evolution of a zirconia sample during flash sintering. Campos performed those experiments at the Brookhaven National Laboratory, National Synchrotron Light Source II, USA. Those results shed some light on the mechanisms that involve the ultrarapid densification promoted during flash sintering.
For this prize, Campos received US$2000.00 and financial support to attend and present his work at The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society annual meeting (TMS) that will take place on March 2023 in San Diego, USA.
