PhD student from PPGCEM and Professor from DEMa/PPGCEM receive international award at conference in Las Vegas
In May, PhD student Ricardo F. Lancelotti (PPGCEM) and Prof. Dr. Edgar D. Zanotto (DEMa/PPGCEM) received the Varshneya-Mauro-Jain Guru-Chela Award from the American Ceramic Society during the international Glass and Optical Material Division annual meeting (GOMD 2024) in Las Vegas.
This international award recognizes the special bond between a professor (Guru) and a student (Chela). It was inspired by the relationship between Prof. Alfred R. Cooper and his students Arun Varshneya and Prabhat Gupta, which transcends into the newer generation with Prof. Varshneya being the Guru and John Mauro and Vijay Jain as the Chelas.
Ricardo and Prof. Zanotto have been working together since 2015, building a long history of professor-student mentoring. In the letter sent to the evaluation committee, Ricardo described how he became interested in glass research and how Prof. Zanotto's guidance enabled him to work with excellent international researchers during research internships in Germany and the United States. Participation in national and international conferences has also been highly significant for Ricardo, allowing him to connect with leading glass researchers, resulting in the publication and submission of 12 scientific manuscripts to date.
As recognition, Ricardo and Prof. Zanotto attended a special luncheon with other awardees and event organizers, and received a travel grant, and certificates.
