E. Zanotto Symposium” on Glass - Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB)

As part of the UN International Year of Glass (IYOG) and to welcome Prof. Edgar D. Zanotto of CerTEV-DEMa/UFSCar, Brazil, as an “Excellence Chair” visitor, Prof. Stéphane Godet of the Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB), Belgium, has organized a symposium on recent advances in glass science and technology. The symposium was attended by researchers from Belgium and France and was funded by the ULB and Asahi Glass Company (AGC) Europe.

PPGCEM Thesis Receives Honorable Mention in the 2024 CAPES Thesis Award

The Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (Capes) released the preliminary results of the 2025 Capes Thesis Award, with the best theses defended in 2024. UFSCar was awarded one awards and two honorable mentions. The Award was granted to the thesis "FRACTURE OF REFRACTORIES AT ROOM AND ELEVATED TEMPERATURES ANALYZED WITH WEDGE SPLITTING TESTS AND IMAGE CORRELATION", from the Engineering II area, and authored by Rafael Vargas Maginador. Developed in the Graduate Program in Materials Science and Engineering (PPGCEM), it was supervised by Rodrigo Bresciani Canto, professor at the Department of Materials Engineering (DEMa).

Dr. Murilo Henrique Moreira, a PhD graduate supervised by Prof. Dr. Victor Carlos Pandolfelli at PPGCEM, achieved 1st place in the renowned Gustav Eirich Award 2025, presented at the International Colloquium on Refractories 2025, held in Aachen, Germany. The award featured competitors from ten different nationalities, including South Korea, Belgium, France, and Poland.

UFSCar PhD Student Receives Bernhard Gross Award for Best Oral Presentation at “Symposium O: Surface Engineering – Functional Coatings and Modified Surfaces” during the XXIII B-MRS Meeting

Ana Larissa Soares Cruz, a PhD student in the Graduate Program in Materials Science and Engineering (PPGCEM/DEMa/UFSCar), received the award for Best Oral Presentation at “Symposium O: Surface Engineering – Functional Coatings and Modified Surfaces” during the XXIII B-MRS Meeting, held in Salvador (Bahia, Brazil). The awarded work, titled “LASER Surface Remelting to Restore Corrosion Resistance in Sulfide-Compromised Austenitic Stainless Steels”, was developed during her master’s studies at PPGCEM, under the supervision of Prof. Guilherme Yuuki Koga and Prof. Piter Gargarella. The research highlights the use of LASER processing to restore the corrosion resistance of stainless steels affected by sulfide inclusions.

Rafael Resende Assis Silva, a Ph.D. candidate at PPGCEM/UFSCar, received the award for best oral presentation in “Symposium M: Materials and Technologies Applied in Sensors for Health, Agricultural, and Environmental” during the XXIII B-MRS Meeting in Salvador (BA). The work, supervised by Prof. Caio Gomide Otoni, presents a sustainable and flexible LIG-based sensor for triple volatile ammonia detection.

Works from PPGCEM DEMa-UFSCar receive International Award

Master’s student Bruno Reitmann Pagliarini and postdoctoral researcher Otávio Henrique Borges (both affiliated with the Microstructure Engineering of Materials Group, coordinated by Prof. Dr. Victor Carlos Pandolfelli at PPGCEM-UFSCar) had their work recognized with first- and second-place awards during the 9th International Postgraduates Seminar on Refractories. The conference is organized by Wuhan University of Technology (China), Montanuniversität Leoben (Austria) and Technische Universität Bergakademie Freiberg (Germany), in collaboration with world-renowned professors in the field of ceramic refractory materials.
