Study conducted at PPGCEM receives an award at the 25th CBECiMat

The work titled “Evaluation of the corrosion resistance of heat-affected zones in lean duplex stainless steel 2404 after welding simulations,” authored by PhDs Cristie Kugelmeier (PPGCEM alumni), Rodrigo Silva (PPGCEM alumni), Guilherme Vacchi (PPGCEM alumni), and Prof. Carlos Rovere (PPGCEM/DEMa-UFSCar), was awarded the Gleeble Prize at the 25th CBECiMat.

A study conducted during the doctoral research of Cristie Luis Kugelmeier, under the supervision of Professor Carlos Alberto Della Rovere (PPGCEM/DEMa-UFSCar) and co-supervision of Professor Vitor Luiz Sordi, presented at the 25th Brazilian Congress on Engineering and Materials Science (CBECiMat), was one of the winners of the Gleeble Award.

The study also included contributions from PhDs Rodrigo da Silva and Guilherme dos Santos Vacchi, PPGCEM alumni. This prestigious award recognizes outstanding contributions in the field of physical simulation of metallurgical processes, highlighting innovative research and significant advancements in the areas of physical metallurgy and materials science. The award ceremony took place during the most recent CBECiMat, the largest event in the field of engineering and materials science in Brazil, held in Fortaleza, CE, from November 24 to 28,
2024.

The awarded study, entitled “Evaluation of the corrosion resistance of heat-affected zones in lean duplex stainless steel 2404 after welding simulations,” evaluated how different cooling rates applied in a single-pass TIG welding process influence the microstructure and corrosion resistance of the material. The results highlighted the importance of using physical welding simulations to identify suitable cooling rates during the welding process, enabling the joining of lean duplex stainless steel 2404 joints while maintaining their corrosion resistance.
