PPGCEM Professor Achieves the "Grand Slam" of Glass Science Lectures

Edgar Dutra Zanotto, a senior professor at DEMa and PPGCEM and coordinator of the Vitreous Materials Laboratory (LaMaV), was awarded the Varshneya Frontiers of Glass Science Lecture, one of the most important awards in the field of glass science, granted by the American Ceramic Society (ACerS).

Professor Edgar Dutra Zanotto, from the Vitreous Materials Laboratory (LaMaV) / DEMa, was awarded the Varshneya Frontiers of Glass Science Lecture, one of the most important awards in the field of glass science, granted by the American Ceramic Society (ACerS).

This Lecture joins three other prestigious lectures that he has already delivered:

  • Willian Turner Memorial Lecture (SGT, UK)
  • Alfred Cooper Distinguished Speaker Lecture (ACerS, USA)
  • Samuel Scholes Memorial Lecture (Alfred University, USA)

The Frontiers of Glass Science Lecture is awarded annually to a scientist who has made exceptional contributions to the advancement of glass science. The list of previous speakers since 2013 includes prominent names from the United States, Canada, France, Germany, and Japan. With this award, Professor Zanotto is the first to complete the "grand slam" of lectures in this area, a feat that consolidates LaMaV's position as one of the world's leading groups in glassy materials.

The lecture, entitled "Unlocking Crystal Nucleation in Supercooled Liquids and Glasses," was delivered in May in Las Vegas. In it, Professor Zanotto share his research on crystal nucleation in glasses, a fundamental topic for the development of new materials. Professor Zanotto is motivated to present a lecture that will inspire the next generation of materials scientists, and takes the opportunity to thank his countless students, collaborators, including O. Peitl, A.C.M. Rodrigues and M. Crovacce.
